SUMMARY:October Young Birder Walk
DESCRIPTION:All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend\, but we gear the walk to the younger set. Lifelong birder\, retired Geology Professor and Gateway Nature Preserve Co-Founder Jeremy Reiskind will lead the group in a voyage of discovery over varied terrains that will include flat paved trails\, the special woodland\, sloped trail that is a highlight of GNP and has exposed bedrock\, and the meadow area with its pollinator garden and viewing platform. If it is warm enough\, there could also be a scramble down the banks to Salem Creek to see what may be happening in the beach area. We should have a mix of resident birds\, possibly late migrants\, and winter visitors. We’ll also explore all aspects of nature as we wander the Preserve. \nAll children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. We encourage everyone to wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Snacks and a beverage are always a good idea. These walks generally last from 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

SUMMARY:October Second Saturday Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Reynolda for our October Second Saturday bird walk! We will enjoy looking for Reynolda’s fall birds and taking a leisurely walk along the woodland trails to learn about the history of Reynolda’s waterways. As we look for birds\, our trip leader\, Dave Zimmer\, will also share the amazing history of Reynolda’s waterways that were vital to the original Reynolda estate and today support birds and diverse habitats. \nPlease meet trip leader Dave at Lake Katharine in front of the Reynolda Boat House at 9:00 AM (consider parking at the lower lot at Reynolda Village). We will be walking on dirt trails and paved roads. Roots and uneven surfaces are present on the trails\, so we suggest that attendees wear closed-toe shoes.

SUMMARY:Fourth Monday Bird Outing
DESCRIPTION:Join Chris Marsh at Horizons Park for our Fourth Monday Bird Walk. We’ll meet in the main parking area where there’s a very convenient restroom in the adjacent picnic area. We will explore both forest and field in search of summer breeders such as orioles\, vireos\, warblers\, Blue Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings. These bird walks are for people who are just learning about birds as well as those who have been birding for years. \nPlease wear sturdy closed-toe shoes (preferably waterproof) as we will be walking through a hilly\, grassy area that might be wet with dew. As this is a mid-summer walk\, it is a good idea to bring water.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Don’t monad-knock it until you’ve monad-tried it: join Katherine Tombs for a bird walk around Pilot Mountain’s peak! We will be meeting at the summit parking lot at 8:30 AM. All ages welcome. See you there!
