Parking for this outing will be at the Family Services paved parking lot – 1200 S. Broad Street\, Winston-Salem\, NC 27101. \nSpecial expert leader\, Jeremy Reiskind\, will lead the outing. Jeremy is a lifelong birder and retired Geology Professor\, UNC School of the Arts. He will show us birds and teach us about the special geological features and stream ecology of the Washington Park / Gateway Preserve area. \nAll Young Birders must be accompanied by a responsible adult. His birding addiction started by collecting bird feathers and trying to see new species at Miller Park. His first job was with the US Forest Service and the University of Georgia\, conducting bird and flora surveys in the Nantahala district out of Coweeta station. After graduate school\, he purchased Wright’s Birding Center with his wife Sarah to continue their love of all things bird-related as a business. Nathan enjoys all types of birding except for hawk watching! Currently\, Nathan is working with his two daughters to foster the same love of nature while still chasing rare birds.

DESCRIPTION:Meet field trip leader Chris Marsh at 9:00 AM at the Ivy Bluff Trail parking area located at 4240 Shoals Road\, East Bend\, NC (enter this address to get directions). \nAfter birding the upland mixed deciduous-pine forest near the parking area\, we will drive a short distance (< 1 mile) to the parking area next to the Yadkin River (4454 Shoals Road) and bird in the floodplain and bluff forests there. This will be an easy walk as we will be birding along the gravel road between these two parking areas. For those of you interested in learning tree identification\, this area has a nice diversity of trees as well as providing excellent habitat for early fall migrants. \nCell phone reception can be weak at this location so here are written driving instructions: This location is easily reached by driving out Reynolda Rd (Hwy 67) to the small community of East Bend. Once on Main Street in East Bend\, go one mile\, then turn right on Fairground Road (go 0.5 miles) then a right on Shady Grove Church Road (go 0.5 miles)\, and then another right on Shoals Road for 2 miles. The Ivy Trail gravel parking area is on the right and is part of the Pilot Mountain State Park. There is a restroom at the parking area.

The outing will be at the Cascades Preserve in the NE portion of Forsyth County (technically just over the Guilford County line). We will meet in the parking lot located at 7359 Goodwill Church Rd\, Kernersville\, NC 27284. \nThe area is hilly and trails are rooted and uneven. It is recommended to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring walking sticks if desired. Don’t forget water and a snack! There are plenty of places to stop along the way\, however\, there are no bathrooms available. This is a new trail for many of us and we are looking forward to see what we discover!

DESCRIPTION:Forsyth Audubon monthly dinners take place on the second Tuesday of each month\, 6PM\, at River Birch Lodge on Robinhood Road. Group reservations are under “Forsyth Audubon”. There is no formal program\, just fun conversation about birds\, nature\, conservation or any topic of the day. Come for a drink and/or a meal. Please email forsythaudubon@gmail.com with your name and total number attending. To be fair to the restaurant\, we release tables not occupied by 6:15\, so please arrive promptly. All are welcome\, including experienced birders\, new birders\, family and friends.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at our April chapter meeting to hear from Robin Davis on how small business sustainability efforts benefit birds\, the environment and humans too. Davis is founder and CEO of Maxie B’s Bakery in Greensboro\, NC. Davis won the 2022 Governor’s Award for North Carolina Business Conservationist of the Year. Last year Maxie B’s won the City of Greensboro’s #LiveGreen “Waste Not Award”. Davis and her team installed native plantings in front and behind the bakery in a strip mall on busy Battleground Avenue in Greensboro and now have birds nesting in the habitat they created. She is on the board of Piedmont Land Conservancy and T.
