Monday Bird Outing

Meet field trip leader Chris Marsh at 9:00 AM at the Ivy Bluff Trail parking area located at 4240 Shoals Road, East Bend, NC (enter this address to get directions).

After birding the upland mixed deciduous-pine forest near the parking area, we will drive a short distance (< 1 mile) to the parking area next to the Yadkin River (4454 Shoals Road) and bird in the floodplain and bluff forests there. This will be an easy walk as we will be birding along the gravel road between these two parking areas. For those of you interested in learning tree identification, this area has a nice diversity of trees as well as providing excellent habitat for early fall migrants.

Cell phone reception can be weak at this location so here are written driving instructions: This location is easily reached by driving out Reynolda Rd (Hwy 67) to the small community of East Bend. Once on Main Street in East Bend, go one mile, then turn right on Fairground Road (go 0.5 miles) then a right on Shady Grove Church Road (go 0.5 miles), and then another right on Shoals Road for 2 miles. The Ivy Trail gravel parking area is on the right and is part of the Pilot Mountain State Park. There is a restroom at the parking area.
