Birding Backpack Program

Three backpacks containing all the supplies needed to go birding are available for checkout at the Central Library in downtown Winston Salem. These birding backpacks were assembled by Forsyth Audubon with the prior approval and enthusiastic support of library personnel. The backpacks contain binoculars and birding books to help in the identification of birds, as well as a few other items that will make your birding experience more fulfilling (a small sit stool, local birding location suggestions, QR codes to Birdability and FA, binocular use tips, ideas for birding app and podcasts).
Two similar backpacks were assembled and provided to the Salem College Eco Club as a pilot program to evaluate the level of engagement by college students.
Table Displays at Community Events
Forsyth Audubon loves to share information about birds and to engage children, youth, and adults in learning more about birds and their impacts on our community! One way we do this is by hosting a table display at community events. Our regular annual events include participation in the Bethabara Apple Festival, Bethania Black Walnut Festival, Forsyth County Creek Week, Christmas for the City, and the Piedmont Environmental Alliance Earth Day Fair. Educational Presentations
Forsyth Audubon is always open to opportunities to educate the public at large about birds, birding, and bird habitat. Our Education Chair and other chapter members will host nature walks, photo presentations and activities for schools, day camps, church groups, seniors, garden clubs, parks, and more! Young Birder Walks
Forsyth Audubon holds regular walks for children and youth who already enjoy birding or who would like to learn more about birding. Chapter members guide the walk and aid the young birders in locating birds with their eyes and with their ears, as well as noticing other wildlife and local native plants. Speakers at Monthly Chapter Meetings
Forsyth Audubon has a speaker at each of its monthly chapter meetings which are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month throughout the year except during the months of June, July, August, and December. Membership in Forsyth Audubon is NOT required to attend these meetings. Topics range from bird identification, bird habitat, eco-friendly bird products and practices, scientific studies related to birds, highlights from international birding tours and trips, ways to be more inclusive in our birding programs and local activities, and much more. One recent speaker was a bird of prey rehabilitator who brought along rescued birds to view as an aid to highlight the topics covered during her presentation.
