Price

When it comes to comparing binoculars manufactured 40 years ago with those manufactured today, binoculars are like computers – you can get a high quality product for a much cheaper price.  A modestly pair of binoculars (less than $200) provides a perfectly adequate image for the beginning birdwatcher.  The more one spends time looking through binoculars, however, the more appreciative one is of the subtle differences in the quality of the image provided by a more expensive pair.

Brands of binoculars popular with local birders:

  • $125-$300          Celestron, Nikon, Vortex
  • $500+                   Zeiss, Nikon, Vortex
  • $1500 + –             Leica, Swarovski, Zeiss

Suggestion: For starters look at the Vortex Crossfire HD 8 x 42 and read its specifications.  Next, compare the specifications and prices of other models of binoculars made by Vortex. Then go to other brands such as Celestron, Nikon, Zeiss, Swarovski and do the same kinds of comparisons.
