What to look for: needles in twos, twisted, short; small cones on all parts of crown

Leaves: needles clustered in twos, 1.5-3″ long, often twisted, minutely toothed, sharp-pointed, yellowish-green to dark green in color

Cones (female): small, 1.5-3″, reddish-brown, short stalk, oblong-conical, spiny-scaled, in clusters of 2 to 4, ripen after two years, on all parts of crown, old cones persist on the tree


Cones (male): cylindrical, tube-like clusters, yellow, contain pollen

Bark: orange-brown scaly bark on young trees and thin small scaly plates with maturity, some have twisted trunks, young twigs glaucous (covered in waxy coating)
